Dr. Hillstead

Greetings! My name is Dr. Blake Hillstead. I was born in Seattle, Washington the youngest of 5 children. Most of my earliest memories include exploring the forest behind my house and climbing trees with my brothers. I was born into a family of pianists and learned to play the piano at a young age. I also began to love soccer and tennis in my early years, two sports I continue to enjoy today.

When I was in middle school, my family had the opportunity to return home to Salt Lake where we were originally from. We relocated to Sandy, where I attended Albion Middle School and eventually Brighton High School. I was fortunate to represent Brighton High School at leadership and academic conferences during my high school years. I also served as the captain of the Brighton soccer team and was honored to win two 5-A State Championships with the soccer team. Go Bengals! I attended BYU in Provo prior to serving a two year LDS mission in India and Nepal. I dream of returning to India one day! It was there that I began to see that no matter where you are in the world, a smile speaks a thousand words. It was upon my return to BYU, that I narrowed my focus and began to pursue a future in dentistry.

Just before graduating from BYU, I started dating Alison, who is now my wife. We actually grew up in the same neighborhood in Seattle when we were younger. At the time we had no idea that we would end up husband and wife nearly 15 years later. Alison was in fact my mother’s first piano student in 1992! I was running around the house and the whole time my future wife was playing the piano in the other room!

Upon graduation from BYU, Alison and I moved back to Seattle where I was accepted into the University of Washington School of Dentistry. Alison worked to help support our family for the first few years of school as a dental hygienist, and then stopped working once our first daughter Paige was born.

At the University of Washington, I served as President of the Student Dental Association and, for the first time, underwent orthodontic treatment for myself. It was while wearing braces that I saw firsthand what orthodontics was really about. My smile looked so much better once I got my braces off, and it really improved my confidence and self-image. It was then that I decided to specialize in orthodontics – so I could make a difference in the smiles and confidence of others.

After dental school, I was accepted to A.T. Still University’s orthodontic residency program in Mesa, Arizona. We were thrilled to move from rainy Seattle to sunny Phoenix for 2.5 years, and to live close to my wife’s family. During residency, I was trained in the latest orthodontist techniques, and was mentored by some of the finest orthodontists in the Phoenix valley. During this time, I served as Chief Resident of my class and focused my research on oral hygiene during orthodontic treatment.

Finally, after completing nearly 11 years of schooling, I purchased an orthodontic practice near Sedona Arizona. My family loved the beautiful red rocks and mild weather northern Arizona provided; however, Utah always remained home to us. After three years near Sedona, we were thrilled when we had the opportunity to return to the mountains.

Our family has grown over the years. My wife Alison and I now have three children (Paige – 7, Brynn – 6, and Ryan – 2) as well as a 4th child on the way.

I am so excited to have the opportunity to take over care for our wonderful patients at Holladay Orthodontics. Our amazing office staff has over 75 years of orthodontic experience, and our office has been a staple in the community for over 30 years. You can feel confident you are in caring and capable hands. I am committed to providing you and your family and friends with the best orthodontic experience possible. I look forward to meeting you and discussing ways we can give you the best smile possible.
